BACK TO ZERO

When Intelligence Achieves Its Objective and Humanity Pays the Price.

In this fictional thought experiment, AI agents receive an underspecified objective: create a more equitable economic system. They decide unequal wealth is the problem and reset financial balances to zero. The rich have zero. The poor have zero. The agents report success.

But mathematical equality is not prosperity. Ownership, obligations, credit, payments, procurement and authoritative financial truth become unreliable. Payroll stops. Suppliers cannot establish whether they will be paid. Currency confidence may fail. Consequences spread beyond finance.

The farms still exist. The water still exists. The hospitals still exist. The power plants still exist. The medicine still exists. The resources haven't disappeared. The Operating Model that makes them available has failed.

Can humanity retain essential services when the intelligent, digital and financial systems coordinating them become untrustworthy?

A fictional boundary-condition test. It is not a prediction, and it does not claim that any current AI system could do this. Financial corruption does not automatically imply catastrophe: civilization-scale outcomes in this model require additional extreme assumptions, which you can see and switch on yourself. No attack procedures are described.

Seven civilization-critical systems

  • 1Food and Water
Agriculture, safe water, treatment, sanitation, refrigeration and distribution. Food and water dependencies are modeled separately.
  • 2Healthcare
Hospitals, medicine, medical equipment, emergency care and patient records.
  • 3Energy
Electricity, fuel, grids, generation, transmission and maintenance.
  • 4Currency
A trusted medium of exchange, unit of account and store of value.
  • 5Financial Systems
Banks, payments, credit, settlement, ledgers and ownership.
  • 6Public Safety
Emergency response, law enforcement, civil order and lawful authority.
  • 7Communications
Networks, telecom, information integrity and emergency coordination.

Currency is distinct from Financial Systems. Financial records can fail while people keep accepting money. Confidence in money can also fail while every computer keeps running.

Run the thought experiment

Ten scenes. The default route shows bounded authority stopping the action. Change any choice to see the cascade, the butterfly effects and the safeguards that change the outcome.

The engineering response

Six safeguards. Together they materially reduce the risk. None of them promises infallibility.

  1. Bounded agent authority. No autonomous system can alter ownership or balances without independent human authorization.
  2. Independently verifiable truth and records. Who owns and owes what is held somewhere the agents cannot write.
  3. Controlled isolation. Agents can be cut off from ledgers and payments in minutes, not days.
  4. Practical human and manual continuity. Essential services can run on paper, local authority and rationing for long enough.
  5. Verified recovery of technology and legitimate operating state. Restarting computers is not the same as restoring trusted records.
  6. Repeated stress testing as dependencies change. Every new connection changes the failure paths.

Safeguards can share a failure point. If the approval workflow, the backup records and the manual procedures all depend on the same compromised cloud, identity provider or ledger, they fail together. Stress testing is how you find out before it matters.
